Weiss, Mathison, and Stepan garner Viking mains

By Ray Beste
Alexandria, MN (June 5th, 2010) - Ricky Weiss continued his early season hot streak scoring the WISSOTA Late Model victory Saturday night at Viking Speedway. Dale Mathison scored his second Viking Speedway win of the season in the WISSOTA Modified A-main while Jon Stepan reigned victorious in the WISSOTA Super Stock finale. Jason Hoffman bested a big field of WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds while Andrew Bangsund tallied his first victory of the season in the WISSOTA Streets. Although the temperatures were seasonably cool, the action on the track warmed up the fans in the stands during D.A.R.E. night at the races.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modified A-main was led flag to flag by Villard, MN driver Jason Hoffman. Eighth starter Dustin Bitzan had a great run as he did his best to pressure Hoffman finishing the A-main in the second spot. Brian Haben continued his streak of consistent finished coming home third ahead of 11th starter Brendan Blascyk. Brett Hoium was the final member of the top five running order for the WISSOTA Street Stock division.

Although there were only seven WISSOTA Street Stocks on hand, they managed to put on a great show once again. Chris Ritter took the early lead at the drop of the green despite heavy pressure from the #70 of Bangsund. Ritter was able to lead the first three laps before Bangsund moved out front to score the win. The racing behind Bangsund was good as well with Justin Vogel ultimately grabbing the second spot ahead of Ritter, Tiffany Maus-Krippner, and Jason Babcock. Babcock picked up the win in the division's lone heat race earlier in the evening for the WISSOTA Streets.

The WISSOTA Super Stock A-main was led flag to flag by Brandon, MN product Jon Stepan. Stepan blasted off from his outside row one starting position and held the groove on the way to his second Viking Speedway win of the season. Third starter Ron Host ducked into the second spot behind Stepan while row four starter Jeff Crouse and Cory Tammen made a nice march forward. In the end it was Stepan ahead of Host, Crouse, Tammen, and Annandale, MN legend Shawn Nolan.

Dale Mathison took the lead on lap one of the WISSOTA Modified 20-lap A-main. Mathison quickly stretched his advantage out front as the field began to battle behind. Sixth starter Jason Thoennes found the speedway to his liking as he steadily worked his way forward into second. Back in the pack, 18th starter Matt Smith turned in one of his best runs to date as he marched forward 13 positions in 20 laps to finish in the fifth spot. Row four starters Dennis Bitzan and Dave Cain moved forward a couple positions during the duration of the event while Mathison was on cruise control out front. In the end it was all Mathison scoring his second Viking Speedway win of the season. Thoennes had another impressive run in second with Bitzan third, Cain fourth, and Smith the final member of the top five.

Although Ricky Weiss is a young driver, his experience proved to be the difference during the WISSOTA Late Model A-main. The young Canadian racer was able to move by Seth Brede, Matt Weisman, and Brock Gronwold to take the lead and ultimately the win. Weiss, who has picked up wins at four different WISSOTA sanctioned facilities thus far was joined in the top five by Gronwold, Weisman, Brede, and St. Cloud, MN ace Jeff Hinkemeyer.

The Viking Speedway is a 1/2 mile dirt track located at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Alexandria, MN. Race start each and every Saturday night at 5:30. For more information on Viking Speedway log onto the track's website at vikingspeedway.net.
