Tammen brothers visit victory lane at Viking
By Ray Beste
Alexandria, MN (May 30th, 2010) - Zach Johnson continued his early season hot streak by scoring the win during night two NLRA Late Model action at Viking Speedway. Craig Christiansen scored his second win in as many weeks in the WISSOTA Modified A-main while Cory Tammen scored his first Viking Speedway win of the season in the WISSOTA Super Stock finale. William Lund turned in a great run winning the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature with Justin Tammen reigning victorious in the WISSOTA Street Stock main event. Drivers, fans, pit crew members, and sponsors convened at the big 1/2 mile for Apol's Harley Davidson and Engebretson Disposal and Recycling night at the races.
William Lund took the lead during lap one action of the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division. The #27 of Lund looked out front while the field battled behind. Fourth starter Chris Mensen moved into second while eighth starter Dusty Bitzan looked strong as well. Holloway, MN driver Brian Haben made a charge from deep in the field starting 17th and ending a great run in eighth. In the end, however, it was Lund picking up his first Viking Speedway win of the season. Chris Mensen picked up his second top five finish in as many nights coming home second ahead of Bitzan, eleventh starter Steve Johnson, and Darrin Braaten. Travis Saurer, Braaten, and Brady Gerdes all scored heat race wins earlier in the evening for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division.
Justin Tammen capped off a great weekend picking up his second win overall. Tammen blasted off his row one starting position taking the lead in the process while the field stacked up tow. David Goulet and Justin Vogel battled for the second spot with Tammen still holding the lead out front. Row four starter Jason Babcock entered the top five with four laps remaining with Goulet seizing control of second behind Tammen. In the end it was Tammen picking up the win in impressive fashion. Goulet, Vogel, Travis Berends and Babcock rounded out the top five running order for the WISSOTA Streeters.
Irvin Cook and Matt Miller shared the row starting duties as the 23-car WISSOTA Super Stock A-main took the green. Fifth starter Cory Tammen quickly moved forward early on as the field worked door to door down the backstretch. Tammen worked his way into the lead bringing Dave Mass with him while Don Eischens began a spirited charge from deep in the field. Eischens went where his opponents didn't starting the A-main in 23rd and finishing sixth. Tammen and Mass ran one two for the remainder of the race with Tammen taking his first Viking Speedway win of the season. Mass, Jeff Kluver, Cook, and Jeff Crouse all garnered top five finishes as well for the WISSOTA Super Stock division. With Justin Tammen winning the Street Stock feature early on, it was definitely a memorable night for the Tammen race team.
For the second time in as many weeks, New London, MN ace Craig Christiansen picked up the win in the WISSOTA Modified A-main. A few yellow flags halted action during the midway point of the race before order was restored. Eighth starter Jason Thoennes looked strong from the get go as he moved from his eighth starting position to finish second behind Christiansen. Nate Heinrich continued his string of consistent finishes coming home third with Jay McDonald fourth, and Dennis Bitzan fifth. Heat race wins were collected by Bitzan, McDonald, Thoennes, and Heinrich for the WISSOTA Modifieds.
The Late Model A-main lived up to it's billing for the second night in a row with Late Model stars Pat Doar, Jeff Wildung and Zach Johnson battling for the lead. With Doar and Wildung on the front row, many thought the winner would likely come from there. Johnson, however, had other ideas from his sixth starting position. Johnson continued to work over the top two before taking the lead and ultimately the win. Back in traffic, Eric Breeschoten had a great car starting 17th and finishing eighth. Out front it was all Johnson picking up the $1,000 payday ahead of Wildung, Doar, Ricky Weiss, and Mike Balcaen. An unbelievable car of 33 Late Models were on hand once again with Doar, Wildung, Balcean, and Jeremy Keller taking qualifying wins.
Join us once again this Saturday night for some more great Amsoil Dirt Track Series Racing. Races start each and every Saturday night at 5:30. For more information regarding Viking Speedway log onto the track's website at www.vikingspeedway.net
