Wildung tops night one NLRA Main

By Ray Beste
Alexandria, MN (May 29, 2010) - Jeff Wildung continued his early season terror by scoring the win during night one action of Viking Speedway's annual NLRA Memorial weekend doubleheader. Defending track champion Dennis Bitzan scored his first win of the season in the WISSOTA Modified finale while Jeff Hapala scored his first ever Viking Speedway win in the WISSOTA Super A-main. Like Hapala, Cale Arneson tallied his first ever win in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event with Tim Jodsaas picking up the win in the WISSOTA Street Stock division. A pit full of racecars and a grandstand full of fans convened at the high speedway 1/2 mile for some great Amsoil Dirt Track Series racing.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modified A-main was led flag to flag by Fargo, ND pilot Cale Arneson. Eighth starter Travis Saurer did his best to apply pressure to the backside of Arneson but Cale was never seriously challenged during the 12-lap affair. Seventh starter Brian Haben had a very nice run moving up four spots into third during the duration of the race with Chris Mensen and Marshal Tofte members of the top five finishing order as well. Tofte, Justin Mackedanz, Haben and Arneson all picked up heat race wins earlier in the show for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division.

Tim Jodsaas led flag to flag picking up the win in the WISSOTA Street Stock main event. The Streeters, who always put on a great show, battled two and three wide behind Johnson with action all over the track. 2009 track champion Jason Babcock moved from his row three starting position into third ahead Barnesville, MN pilot Chris Ritter. Justin Vogel and Andy Bangsund both turned in great runs as well as they each finished in the top five as well. The division's lone heat race was won by Horace, ND invader Babcock.

The WISSOTA Super Stock A-main proved to be a dandy with Jeff Hapala grabbing the early advantage. Cory Tammen battled to the inside of Hapala early on but was unable to make the pass and Hapala held the groove out front. Ninth starter Jeff Flaten looked to be the fastest car on the speedway as he moved by Tammen via the high line exiting turn four. Flaten quickly moved in on the backside of Hapala for the lead as the laps winded down to four. Hapala ran the middle groove with Flaten up top. On the final trip around, Flaten loaded up his #15F machine on the high side of the speedway entering turn three. Hapala, however, was smooth and went on to score his first ever Viking Speedway WISSOTA Super Stock feature win. Flaten had another great run coming home second with Tammen third, Ashley Donald fourth, and Jeff Crouse fifth. Irvin Cook, Crouse, and Flaten each garnered heat race victories earlier in the evening for the WISSOTA Supers.

Although Matt Smith led early on, it was Dennis Bitzan tallying the win in the WISSOTA Modified finale. Smith, however, settled back into the groove holding second behind Bitzan. Eighth starter Nate Heinrich continued his streak of consistent finishes coming home third ahead of Danny Bayer and ninth starter Travis Saurer. Dave Storck picked up the hard charger award starting 24th and finishing 14th. The 30-car field was divided into four heat races with Jason Thoennes, Heinrich, Shane Edgington, and Dallas Gulbrandson all scoring wins.

The WISSOTA/NLRA feature win proved to be a great one with Jeff Wildung taking the early lead. The action was hot and heavy behind with cars spread out all over the track. Jeremy Keller looked to have the car to beat early on as he moved from his 8th starting spot up into third. Keller and Eric Breeschoten battled for the second spot with Wildung stretching his advantage out front. As the race wore on, it was obvious that Marshall Fegers was going to be a player in the final outcome of the event. Sixteenth starting Fegers cracked the top five with six laps remaining as Wildung held the groove out front. Fegers continued to move forward as he moved into fourth when the final yellow waved with five laps remaining. When the green dropped again, Fegers made a great move catapulting from fourth to second exiting turn two via the bottom groove. Wildung took the white flag with Fegers in hot pursuit as the duo worked through turns one and two. Wildung, however, made no mistakes and went on to pick up the win. Fegers turned in an unbelievable run coming home second with Keller third, Breeschoten fourth, and Justin Fegers fifth. The 37-car Late Model field was divided into five heat races with Matt Aukland, Breeschoten, Wildung, Seth Brede, and Jason Thoennes all picking up qualifying wins. Marshall Fegers and Lance Mathees took home the wins in each of the two WISSOTA Late Model B-mains.

Join us once again this Saturday night at the high speedway 1/2 mile. Races start each and every Saturday night at 5:30. For more information regarding Viking Speedway log onto www.vikingspeedway.net
