A wacky wild night at Viking closes regular season

By Ray Beste
Alexandria, Mn (September 7th, 2009) - Madison, Mn legend Scott Tofte had the capacity crowd on their collective feet when he took the checkered flags first during WISSOTA Modified action Saturday night at Viking Speedway. In WISSOTA Super Stock action Jeff Kluver reigned victorious over the field while Brett Hoium picked up the win in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified finale. In only his second appearance of the season at the speedway, Breezy Point, Mn driver Shawn Wageman scored the win in the WISSOTA Street Stock A-main while Lou Kennedy Jr made it two for two on the weekend tallying the victory in the NOSA 410 Sprint feature. Fans, pit crew members and drivers alike once again convened at the 1/2 mile for Season Championship night presented by H. Boyd Nelson.

The first feature of the night belonged to the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Jeremy Kerzman stole the lead from Brett Hoium with four laps remaining taking the lead for good. Hoium then locked himself in a duel with Jason Hoffman for the second spot. Hoium and Hoffman battled back and fourth before Hoium was able to hold off Hoffman at the line. Josh Thoennes, Jeff Marshall and Dusty Bitzan rounded out the top five running order. After the conclusion of the race, however, Kerzman refused a protest which handed the trophy over to Hoium. The resulting incident also gave the WISSOTA Midwest Modified point championship to Josh Thoennes. Thoennes has now collected the last two track championships at Viking in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division.

The WISSOTA Street Stock main event was absolutely dominated by Breezy Point, Mn driver Shawn Wageman. Wageman, who has been a pillar at Viking each of the past three seasons, made only his second appearance of the season Sunday night. Shawn showed little rust as he went on to score the win. Henry Peters remained a safe distance behind Wageman for the lead while the best battle on the track was for the third spot. James Tandeski, Justin Vogel, David Goulet and Jason Babcock all battled tooth and nail for the third spot with Tandeski eventually gaining the advantage. In the end it was Wageman being followed to the line by Peters, Tandeski, Vogel and Goulet. Vogel collected the win in heat race one with Wageman completing his clean sweep in heat two. Horace, ND driver Jason Babcock was crowned 2009 Viking Speedway WISSOTA Street Stock track champion.

With seventeen laps in the books, it looked as if Jeremy Jerve would collect his second win in as many nights at Viking Speedway. Jerve, however, pulled up lame coming off of turn four which handed the lead over to Jeff Kluver with three laps remaining. Behind Kluver the action was hot and heavy with plenty of hard charging efforts taking place. The always steady Todd Carter moved from his tenth starting spot to finish second ahead of Jason Vejtruba. Sixteenth starter Matt Miller rode the extreme high side of the speedway to a fourth place finish with Ron Host being the final member of the top five. Shawn Nolan, Jeff Crouse and Cory Tammen all tallied heat race wins earlier in the show for the WISSOTA Super Stock division.

Madison, Mn driver Scott Tofte led wire to wire going unchallenged picking up the win in the WISSOTA Modified division. Eighth starter Dennis Bitzan looked as if he might have the car to beat early on before Tofte pulled away on a couple of restarts. Row five starter Jay McDonald steadily moved his way to the front as well as he finished a strong third with Danny Bayer fourth and "The Legend" Dave Storck also in the top five. Bitzan, Dwayne Clarke and Bayer all reigned victorious in WISSOTA Modified heat race action earlier in the program.

Although Thomas Kennedy passed his father Lou on lap nine of the NOSA Outlaw Sprint Feature, Father Lou would return the favor with two laps remaining going on to score his second win in as many nights. Thomas Kennedy had a great run following his father to the line as the Kennedy's were joined by young guns Casey Mack and Lee Grosz. Brad Barickman moved up five positions during the duration of the A-main as he rounded out the top five.

Join us once again this Saturday night for another edition of Amsoil Dirt Track Series Racing. The Annual Jerry Kluver Memorial will be taking place for WISSOTA Super Stocks with all regular classes scheduled to compete except for the WISSOTA Late Models.
