Point battles tighten on night one at Viking

By Ray Beste
Alexandria, Mn (September 5th, 2009) – Although Montevideo, Mn driver Jeremy Jerve has tallied many wins in the IMCA Stock Car division, it was until Saturday night that he scored his first ever WISSOTA Super Stock feature win in impressive fashion at Viking Speedway. Scott Gilbertson tallied his second win in as many weeks in WISSOTA Modified competition while Lou Kennedy Jr topped the Northern Outlaw Sprint Association's (NOSA) 25-lap A-main. Local product Shawn Olson garnered his first ever feature win in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified finale while Jason Babcock reigned victorious in WISSOTA Street Stock action. The lightning fast ˝ mile provided action all evening long for the eager racefans in attendance during Robert R. Schroeder Construction, Pepsi and Morris Auto Plaza night at the speedway.

Scott Zimmerman and Olson shared the front row starting duties for the 15-lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified A-main. Olson took the early lead while fourth starter Josh Muzik moved into second. The first yellow of the event waved on lap three. Jeremy Kerzman tagged the end of the field for the double-file restart. When the green flag dropped, Thunder Bay, ONT invader Jeff Marshall wasted little time on his way to the front. Marshall disposed of a competitor a lap finding himself in the runner up spot with five laps remaining. Marshall closed up on the backside of Olson for the lead while Kerzman began to march his way through the field. After going back to twenty-sixth, Kerzman blasted around the wicked fast ˝ mile moving back into the top five with two laps remaining. Tenth starter Dusty Bitzan looked very strong as well as he moved into third with three laps remaining. Marshall tried everything in his power to overtake Olson but it was not enough as the youngster went on to score his first ever WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature win. Marshall, who always runs well at Alex, settled for a hard fought second place finish ahead of Bitzan, Kerzman and Zimmerman. Brendan Blascy, Olson and Marshall all garnered heat race wins for the Midwest Modified division.

The WISSOTA Street Stock A-main proved to be a good one with Babcock and Crapser putting on a show for the fans in the remaining laps. Babcock pedaled his #76 machine around the top of the speedway as Crapser worked the middle. As the laps clicked off the two battled harder and harder. On the final trip around, Crapser made a bonzai move to the inside of Babcock. Babcock, however, stayed strong and used his top side momentum to garner the win. Justin Vogel remained steady picking up the third place finish with fifteenth starter Shawn Wageman finishing fourth. Row five starter Justin Tammen rounded out the top five with a strong run in his #71 machine.

Montevideo, Mn driver Jerve led flag to flag picking up the win in the WISSOTA Super Stock finale. Behind Jerve, however, the action was hot and heavy and many drivers made charges from deep in the field. Row five starters Jeff Crouse and Don Shaw made their way through the field simultaneously as each entered the top five with six laps remaining. Fourteenth starter Cory Tammen found the speedway to his liking as well as he cracked the top five in the ladder stages of the event. Shaw and Crouse continued their way forward as the duo finished third and fourth respectively. Out front it was all Jerve as he looked very strong picking up his first career Super Stock victory. Larry Lund used his familiar high groove to finish second with Shaw third, Crouse fourth and Tammen fifth. Todd Carter, Mike Peterson and Lund all picked up heat race wins.

With the track sporting multiple lanes, the WISSOTA Modifieds rolled out onto the speedway. Shane Endgington and Terry Engebretson shared the front row starting duties as head flagman Mike Commerford dropped the green. The yellow flag waved early on before third starter Jamie Lemke took the lead. Lemke looked strong early on as he quickly stretched the advantage. A four wide battle for the second spot ensued early on with Mike Storck executing a power moved picking up three spots into third. A couple yellow flags halted action during the middle stages of the event. Gilbertson, who started seventh, began to work the extreme top side of the speedway with ten laps up on the board. Gilbertson moved by Matt Smith into second with nine to go and immediately battled Lemke for the lead. Lemke worked the bottom with Gilbertson up top. Gilbertson found the grip he needed with seven to go as He blasted by Lemke for the top spot off of turn two. Sixteenth starter Dave Schroeder looked very strong during the duration of the event as he used the bottom of the speedway to move forward. When the dust settled Schroeder finished just outside of the top five in sixth. Lemke moved to the top of the speedway and drew closer to Gilbertson in the remaining laps but it was not enough as Scott went on to score his second win in as many weeks. Lemke, fresh off a win Friday night, had another great run in the second spot followed by Mike Storck, Jay McDonald and Smith. Dave Storck had a stellar run as well starting 20th and finishing 8th.

Wade Nygaard looked as if he had the car to beat early on during action in the Northern Outlaw Sprint Association's (NOSA) 25-lap A-main. Lou Kennedy had other ideas, however, as he overtook Nygaard for the top spot with nine laps to go. Kennedy's son, Thomas, was another driver to watch as well as he pedaled his #20k machine around the top of the speedway much to the delight of the fans. Thomas Kennedy moved up six spots during the duration of the event ending a gret run in the fourth spot. 2008 ASCS Regional Champion Lee Grosz finished a strong second to Kennedy with Brad Barickman finishing third. Thomas Kennedy and Estevan, SK traveler Kyle Fedyk rounded out the top five running order during night one action for the NOSA Sprints.
