Wildung continues hot streak at Viking
By Ray Beste
Alexandria, Mn (August 29th, 2009) - Scott Gilbertson outlasted Jason Thoennes picking up the win in the WISSOTA Modified finale Saturday night at Viking Speedway. Jeff Wildung stayed hot collecting the win in the WISSOTA Late Model division while Don Shaw reigned victorious in the WISSOTA Super Stock A-main. William Lund tallied his first feature win of the season in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified A-main while Jason Babcock picked up yet another win in WISSOTA Street Stock competition. Fans, pit crew members and drivers alike convened once again at the big 1/2 mile for some great Amsoil Dirt Track Series Racing, Viking Speedway style.
Pole-sitter William Lund led flag to flag picking up the win in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified A-main. Lund took the lead from the get go while the competition stacked up in tow. Josh Thoennes had a tremendous run moving from his ninth starting spot to finish in the second spot behind Lund. "Mr. Consistency" Brian Haben came home in the third spot ahead of Josh Muzik and Brian Krog. Haben, Dusty Bitzan and Brendan Blascyk all collected qualifying wins earlier in the show for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified division, which boasted 19 cars.
Jason Babcock once again proved why he is one of the best in the business picking up the win in the 12-lap WISSOTA Street Stock finale. Babcock grabbed the lead on lap three and never looked back on his way to victory. WISSOTA Street Stock rookie Justin Tammen had a stellar run coming home in the second spot ahead of outside pole-sitter Chris Winter. "Nitro" Jimmy Williams had another steady run coming home fourth with Travis Berends rounding out the top five. Andrew Bangsund tallied the win in heat race one with Justin Tammen reigning victorious in heat race two.
Fifth starter Don Shaw proved to be the class of the field during 20-lap action in the WISSOTA Super Stock finale. Shaw worked his familiar bottom groove on his way to victory. Matt Miller had a tremendous run tallying his best ever finish to date coming home second with Mike Peterson, Jason Vejtruba and Jon Stepan rounding out the top five running order. Jeff Flaten picked up the win in heat race one while Derrick Lemke reigned victorious in heat race two. Jon Stepan tallied the win in the third and final heat race for the WISSOTA Super Stock division.
In a race that proved to be a war of attrition, Gilbertson picked up the win in the 20-lap WISSOTA Modified finale. Gilbertson got his machine up on the top of the speedway early on and never looked back on his way to victory. Jason Thoennes steadily moved forward from his sixth starting position finishing second ahead of "Mr. Modified" Jay McDonald. The story of the night, however, was the hard charge turned in by Willmar, Mn driver Kent Wilms. Wilms started in the seventeenth position and came home fourth. Wayne Wieberdink collected his first top five run of the season by finishing fifth ahead of fifteenth starter Matt Smith. Heat race wins were collected by Dennis Bitzan and Jay McDonald.
Although Shawn Kirwin proved to be a worth adversary, it was Wildung tallying yet another WISSOTA Late Model feature win in the division's 20-lap A-main feature event. After starting ninth, Wildung moved out front and proved to be the car to beat at the conclusion of the feature event. Kirwin moved forward from his sixth starting spot to finish second with Jeremy Keller third, Seth Brede fourth and Zach Johnson the final member of the top five. Brede, Rick Nelson and Keller all collected heat race wins for the WISSOTA Late Model division which boasted 19 ready combatants.
