Fans treated to exciting 1/2 mile action at Viking

By Ray Beste
Alexandria, Mn (August 1st, 2009) – Although Jeff Wildung gave him everything he wanted, St. Cloud, Mn driver Jeff Hinkemeyer scored the win in the WISSOTA Late Model division Saturday night at Viking Speedway. Scot Danzeisen scored his third Viking Speedway victory of the season in WISSOTA Modified competition while Don Shaw tallied yet another 57-point night in the WISSOTA Super Stock division. Dustin Bitzan ultimately reigned victorious in WISSOTA Midwest Modified action after Eric Krog was disqualified with Jason Babcock tallying the win with a dramatic last lap pass in the WISSOTA Street Stock class. Seventy-Nine racecars packed the pits for Country Cat and Central Equipment sales night at the speedway. Fans and drivers alike converged once again at the big ˝ mile for some heart pounding Amsoil Dirt Track Series action.

Brian Krog got the jump on Dan Greeley and took the lead early on during opening lap action of the 15-lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified A-main. Krog looked strong early on and was scored the leader at the conclusion of the first circuit. The track looked to be in excellent condition as the racers began to mix it up behind Krog for position. Row four starters Jeremy Kerzman and Josh Thoennes began to work their way forward near the midway point of the race while Krog remained strong out front. Back in traffic, WISSOTA Midwest Modified rookie Darrin Braaten showed his steady improvement for the second week in a row. After starting nineteenth, Braaten found himself in the ninth position with two laps remaining. Like Braaten, Villard, Mn driver Brett Hoium also made a charge from deep in the field. Hoium ended a great run in the seventh spot when the final checkers waved. In the end the aforementioned Krog picked up the initial victory over Bitzan, Kerzman,Thoennes and Weisman. After post race tech, however, Krog was disqualified handing the win over to Bitzan. That moved Holloway, Mn ace Brian Haben into the top five running order as well for the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds.

Jordan Tollakson and Canadian invader Henry Peters shared the row one starting duties for the 12-lap WISSOTA Street Stock A-main. Peters climbed the hill in turn one and took the opening lap advantage over Tollakson. Fourth starter Scott Horn quickly moved into second behind Peters via the high line while the rest of the racers battled for positions three through nine. With five laps still up on the board it was Peters still holding the lead now enduring heavy pressure from the #10 of Justin Vogel. Seventh starter Jason Babcock methodically worked his way to the front as he joined the fray with three laps remaining as well. On the final trip around, Babcock made one of the most sterling moves in recent memory blasting by Vogel and Peters ultimately scoring the feature win in dramatic fashion. The WISSOTA Street Stock division had the crowd on their collective feet once again as Babcock was joined in the top five finishing order by Vogel, Peters, Andrew Bangsund and Horn. Bangsund was also victorious in the division's lone heat race.

Although Don Shaw was able to tally the win once again in the WISSOTA Super Stock finale, hard charging efforts was the theme of the main event. Shaw steadily worked his way forward from his ninth starting position picking up the process. Behind Shaw, however, many cars were on the march during the duration of the event. Row six starter Larry Lund raced to a second place finish ahead of eighth starter Jeff Flaten. Tenth starter Jon Stepan moved up six positions during the event to finish fourth ahead of nineteenth starter Jeff Kluver. Kluver proved to be the hard charger of the event moving up fourteen positions in just 20-laps. Mike Peterson, Mark Blom and Shaw all collected heat race wins earlier in the program for the WISSOTA Super Stock division.

WISSOTA Modified rookie Matt Smith took the lead on lap one of the division's 20-lap main event. As the race went on, however, it was more than apparent that row five starter Danzeisen was on the move. Scot pedaled his machine through the middle of the speedway while most people worked the cushion or near the inside tire barrier (bottom groove). Danzeisen picked them off one by one before taking over the top spot during the second half of the race. WISSOTA Midwest Modified regular Jeremy Kerzman jumped behind the wheel of Bob Gierke's #26 WISSOTA Modified once again and looked very strong in the division he use to call home. Kerzman look to feel comfortable behind the wheel of the Fegers mount as advanced three positions into second position in the ladder stages of the event. Back in traffic, eighteenth starter Curt Lund moved up eight positions into the top ten through attrition and a pretty solid handling machine. Two and three wide racing was witnessed all over the speedway with Danzeisen scoring the win in the end from his tenth starting position. Following Danzeisen to the line was Kerzman, Dallas Gulbrandson, Jason Thoennes and Dennis Bitzan. Thoennes, Mike Storck and Gulbrandson all garnered heat race wins earlier in the program for the WISSOTA Modifieds.

It did not take long for Hinkemeyer to seize the advantage during the first lap of the WISSOTA Modified finale. Hinkemeyer took the lead from the get go and immediately began to stretch his lead to a sizable amount. Fourth starter Jeff Wildung moved into second by lap six while first time visitor Mike Prochnow raced in third. The laps clicked off one by one as Wildung began to draw closer and closer to Hinkemeyer for the lead. Wildung was able to catch Hinkemeyer but was unable to make the pass in the five remaining laps as Hinkemeyer went on to score the mighty impressive feature triumph. Wildung settled for a hard fought second ahead of Prochnow, Don Shaw and Rick Nelson. Wildung tallied the win in the division's heat race for the WISSOTA Late Models.

Join us once again this Saturday night for another great night of Amsoil Dirt Track Series action, “Viking Speedway style.” Races start each and every Saturday night at 5:30. For more information regarding up-coming events log onto the track's website at vikingspeedway.net
