PolyDome WDRL Super Series To Invade Viking In 2006
FYE Motorsports owner Chris Stepan and Viking Speedway President Phil Merten are excited to announce that for the first time ever in the history of the Viking Speedway, the PolyDome World Dirt Racing League will be in action at the ultra-smooth ˝ mile.
FYE Motorsports will add a third show to the schedule at Viking in ’06 along with the very popular 2nd annual $7,000 to win Minnesota Modified Nationals on July 1st & 2nd and the 4th annual Viking Fall Classic on October 5th, 6th and 7th. This new event will be a one-day show featuring a $5,000 to win WDRL Late Model program along with a WISSOTA Midwest Modified and Street Stock show.
“I love the idea of bringing the WDRL to Viking in 2006,” said Stepan. “Viking is one of my favorite race tracks in the entire country and putting on this type of a show should be a big hit. The first week of August will be a treat for the fans in the Upper Midwest, because they will be able to see most of the top Late Model drivers run for nearly $70,000 to win at 4 different tracks within a 6 day stretch. Cedar Lake will host it’s annual USA Nationals on the 4th and 5th of August and then Superior Speedway will kick off a three-day WDRL swing throughout the area on Monday, August 7th before the WDRL heads to Viking on Tuesday night. I am working on leasing another area track for a WDRL show on Wednesday night as well, to round out a very exciting week in the area before the WDRL heads to on Thursday night. Jim Wilson of the World Dirt League commented that “We are excited to bring our group to Viking Speedway this year. It has been about 10 years since I have been to Viking, but I have only heard great things about them in recent years, so we are looking forward to this being a first class event. It’s kind of like going back to see some old friends for me. We are also happy to team up with Chris (Stepan) to promote some of our shows in his area. Chris and I get along great and have the same visions when it comes to what types of events we like to put on, so having him on board is a great asset to our program.”
Merten said “We used to run some outlaw type Late Model shows here at Viking when Jim was with NASCAR, but we haven’t held any kind of open Late Model show here in Alex since the mid 1990’s. Stepan brought the idea to the board a few months ago about running a World Dirt League show here and we thought it would be a great idea, so we went with it.”
This should be one of the must-see events of 2006 and should boast a huge contingent of local drivers to try to protect their home turf from the visiting drivers. A regular Viking Speedway Late Model competitor said “We have a very talented group of guys that race hear on a weekly basis and we are all excited to show the traveling guys the fast way around the ˝ mile!”
