Alexandria, MN (July 24th, 2010) – Kensington, MN driver Darrin Braaten held off a late surge from Travis Saurer scoring his first ever WISSOTA Midwest Modified win Saturday night at Viking Speedway. Larry Lund took top honors in the WISSOTA Super Stock division while Danny Bayer notched his first career Viking Speedway WISSSOTA Modified victory. Justin Tammen (WISSOTA Street Stocks) and Jeff Wildung (WISSOTA Late Models) each scored impressive wins during Auto Value night at the races.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modified A-main was first on tap with Verndale, MN racer Scott Werk taking the early lead. Werk looked as if he might spoil the part as he worked his way out to a sizable advantage early on. With six laps remaining, however, Werk surrendered the lead to Braaten exiting turn four. Eighth starter Travis Saurer moved up six positions into second looking as if he might spoil the party when the final yellow of the event waved with two laps remaining. Braaten, however, was able to hold the lead scoring his first ever WISSOTA Midwest Modified win in the process. Saurer had another stellar run coming home second with Werk third, Josh Muzik and Dusty Bitzan the final member of the top five.
The WISSOTA Street Stock A-main was dominated by Clara City, MN product Justin Tammen. Tammen took the lead on lap one and never looked back on his way to an impressive victory. Jason Babcock moved forward from his row four starting position to finish second ahead of Chris Winter. Andrew Bangsund made a last lap pass of Tiffany Maus-Krippner to grab the fourth spot which made Maus-Krippner the final member of the top five. Tammen's win in heat race one made it a sweep for the second year driver while “Nitro” Jimmy Williams reigned victorious in heat race two.
The WISSOTA Super Stock A-main featured a great battle out front between Larry Lund, Jeff Crouse, and Cory Tammen. Jeff Flaten took the early lead from the front row before popping over the banking with nine laps remaining. That would give the lead to Lund while Crouse and Tammen battled for second. With three laps remaining, Crouse pulled up lame coming out of turn two with the field negotiating his slowed machine down the backstretch. Tammen threw everything but the kitchen sink at Lund in the remaining laps but it was not enough to deny Lund the mighty impressive A-main win. Tammen, a pillar of consistency this year at the speedway, finished a strong run in second followed by Ron Host, Jon Stepan and Cody Lee. Mike Peterson, Tammen, and Lee all scored impressive heat race wins earlier in the evening for the WISSOTA Super Stocks.
After leading the majority of the WISSOTA Modified makeup feature earlier in the evening, Danny Bayer turned in a great run scoring the feature win in the WISSOTA Modified finale. Bayer took the lead from Josh Thoennes on lap seven fending off serious challenges from Scot Danzeisen in the process. Eighth starter Jason Thoennes had a nice run moving up five positions during the 20-lap affair while Dennis Bitzan and Travis Saurer each turned top five runs in as well. Redwood Falls, MN product Curt Lund rallied late to turn in a nice run finishing sixth from his row five starting spot. Twenty-seven WISSOTA Modifieds signed in to do battle with Saurer, Bitzan, and Jason Thoennes scoring heat race wins on the big ˝ mile.
The final race of the evening belonged to the WISSOTA Late Model division with Matt Weisman taking the early advantage. Weisman looked strong early and often before surrendering the lead to Shawn Kirwin on lap eighth. Kirwin looked as if he might be the car to beat before losing the left front tire near the midway point of the race. That handed the lead back over to Weisman briefly while Ricky Weiss and Jeremy Keller battled for the second spot. Jeff Wildung, however, had different ideas as he loaded up his Sturdy powered Rocket on the cushion heading into turn one. Wildung blasted through turns one and two taking the lead from the fourth spot checking out in the process. Wildung was strong in the remaining laps and was never seriously challenged by Weiss and Keller. Weisman, who pulled double duty once again, finished a nice run in the fourth spot followed by Jeff Hinkemeyer. Wildung reigned victorious in heat race one while Kirwin took top honors in heat race two.
